IT builds a new help desk system for the organization where this pilot fish works, and it's a big improvement.

"Now users could enter help desk tickets from anywhere and have the ticket routed to the right person," says fish.

"Our CIO made the decision that this help desk could be used for anything, PC-related or not. For example, it could be used for building maintenance requests.

"About three days into the new help desk, a ticket is entered requesting building service -- there was a window leaking.

"My CIO was reading all of the calls. To this one he dutifully responded: 'Please enter your version of Windows when opening a ticket.'"

Sena Case for HP IPAQ 4355

SENA Case For HP IPAQ 4355
by buhduh (Andrew Secord)

My new HP Pocket Pc arrived with all the standard accessories, including the ballistic nylon slipcase. I know some people complain about this case, but in fact I kind of like it’s rugged simplicity. However it just does not quite rate when it comes to a REAL case from a REAL case manufacturer like SENA.

The red and black leather case I received has a great feel and smell to it. This is not a purse-like case like some I’ve had. This has a more “masculine” look and feel to the style. Kind of like if Shaft carried a PDA, this might be how he would protect it! And the colour contrast gives it a touch of pizzazz, in a Shelby Cobra sort of way. Ok…enough of that, I don’t want to get too carried away!

I wasn’t quite sure how my new case would handle the fact that the IPAQ 4355 has the built in keyboard, but I soon learned as I opened the package. The keyboard area is protected by a clear plastic (vinyl?) screen, which still allows for easy use of the built in thumb-board. The tactile feel is still good with only minor loss of control, but more on that later.

I was very happy with the nice tight fit that the case has as I slid the Pocket PC into it. A good form fit all around, and it actually took a bit of effort to get the device to slide all the way to the bottom. Thankfully the case does not have to be removed to set the IPAQ in the cradle. Once again, I have one small quibble that I will talk about later.

The case has well shaped slots and cutaways for all buttons, ports and doodads on the IPAQ. They thought of all the details there. I like for example that the headphone jack and speaker are exposed on one side of the top of the case when closed, but the stylus is covered so can’t slip out inadvertently. All the stitching is precise and tight.

The case is very slim, and not actually padded. The top is quite stiff and offers good protection to the screen. Closure is by two small magnets hidden in the band of leather that crosses the face just below the touch screen, with corresponding metal inserts or magnets in the lid. Overall it works well, as the case will still slide easily into a pocket. I did not get the belt clip option so this is a good thing.

The lid has the usual slots for cards or ID (3 of them), and 2 more for extra SD memory cards, plus one deeper one that could hold a few bills.

Outside and in are subtle embossments of the SENA name. No patches or metal adornments of any sort to block the view.

Before using this case one fault I found with the HP cradle and the 4355 in it is that the fit is a little fiddly. It tends to lean a bit too far back, and makes for a tentative seat. Sometimes I get it right and sometimes not. Well with the SENA case it actually seems to work better. The lower portion of the back of the case is only one layer of leather thick and that seems to help. It is a slightly more positive fit with the case than without. With the tight fit I am quite happy with the fact that it will cradle while in the case.

And now for the flaws, minor as they are:

Look carefully at the picture above. On the right of the screen you can see the leather doesn’t travel in a straight line. The leather actually just bows a little but is actually a straight cut. It does that on both sides, and exposes a tiny bit of the silver colour of the IPAQ case on either side of the screen. For purposes of emphasizing this I have adjusted the brightness and contrast of the photo, and taken it from an angle. So I have made it look worse than it is in real life, so it really is a minor issue. I think it may come from the case just being too tight, and it has to stretch a tiny bit. Hardly noticeable most of the time…

The only other issue is also minor but should be mentioned. I read lots of ebooks, which require me to use the down button of the D-Pad frequently to advance to the next page. Occasionally, I seem to skip ahead several pages rather than one as I intended. It seems to come from the clear plastic cover restricting the release of the button. It is not a big deal, as it happens very seldom, and I just have to scroll back up, but it is a small annoyance. As for all other operations of the keyboard, I have not noticed any hindrance or effect to its smooth operation.

Complaints aside, I think this is a very fine product, and would still give it high marks. I can easily overlook the minor issues and would not trade this case for the other brands I have tried. Now I just have to find that ¾ length leather jacket, and those funky shades and hit the road!
